Football: Al Shabab, Al Nasr begin Omantel League campaign with victories

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Last year's runner-up Al Shabab began its campaign in the 2017-18 Omantel League with a 2-0 win over debutant Al Mudhaibi at the Seeb Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

The opening day of the top-flight league had all the 14 teams in action with two games scheduled for 8.45pm kick-off including the match featuring defending champion Dhofar against Salalah-based Mirbat.

However, the early game in Salalah had former champion, Al Nasr, record a 2-0 win over Oman Club at the Al Saada Sports Complex.

Khalid al Hamdani struck an early goal for Al Nasr in the eighth minute and Fahad Naseeb made it 2-0 in the 39th minute. The five-time winner then held on to the lead to grab the three points.

At the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, nine-time champion Fanja survived a scare to draw 2-2 with Muscat.

Both of Fanja's goals came off penalty-kicks with Abdulrehman al Ghassani and Shawqi converting the spot-kicks.

Al Arouba was held to a goalless draw by Al Salam at the Sohar Sports Complex while at Buraimi Sports Complex, hosts Al Nahda edged past Sohar 3-2 in a thriller to collect full points on the opening day.

In another late kick-off, Al Suwaiq was to meet Saham in a Batinah derby.
