Amman, Sept. 13 (Petra) -- His Majesty King Abdullah II, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, on Wednesday, inaugurated a new expansion of the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC) to increase its capacity from 173 to 352 beds and contribute to providing the latest cancer treatment technologies, within sophisticated and integrated facilities.
The expansion included the construction of two new buildings, with an area of 84,700 square meters, to double the total size of the center to 108,700 square meters.
Their Majesties, accompanied by HRH Princess Ghida Talal, KHCC and KHCF's Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, toured the center's departments, and were briefed on the latest technical and medical specifications introduced.
Their Majesties also checked on a number of patients, who are receiving treatment in the center, and visited the children's playroom.
The first building, which was named after King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, comprises 13 floors with additional 179 beds, an integrated section for diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy; an integrated bone marrow transplant unit, intensive care rooms for adults and children as well as pediatric and adult patients wards, and private suites.
The second building, named after Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, comprises 10 floors with a capacity of 250,000 visits annually. It includes Khalid Shoman Educational Center, a comprehensive medical center dedicated to women, a comprehensive pediatric center, a cell treatment center, which will make a quantum leap in cancer research conducted by the center, as well as the first public cord blood bank, and multi-sepeciality clinics.
The new expansion will enable the center to perform 300 bone marrow transplantations annually, making it one of the largest bone marrow transplant centers in the region.
At the opening ceremony, Princess Ghida expressed appreciation to His Majesty King Abdullah II for supporting the Center's march, which today, after 16 years of its founding, has become the "Jordan's medical jewel" and represents the finest in the treatment of cancer.
During the inauguration, a short film was played about the center, its establishment and efforts exerted to enable it to provide the best medical and therapeutic care for Jordanian and Arab patients. It also highlighted King Abdullah's role in supporting the KHCC.
At the ceremony, His Majesty the King honored a number of institutions and figures, who contributed to the completion of the two new buildings, and they include the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the family of the late Iraqi philanthropist Nizar Al Naqib in recognition of their generous donations to the center.
The new expansion will increase the number of annual admissions to the center to 14,000 cases annually, and will enable it to handle 7,000 new cases annually.
The expansion also contributed to an increase in the number of operating rooms to 13 rooms equipped with all the latest advanced technologies, including specialized rooms to conduct specialized, accurate and complex brain operations, while the number of intensive care units increased to 36 units.
