The General Directorate of Traffic Department has asked school bus drivers to strictly follow traffic rules to ensure safety and security of students and curb traffic violations, a senior official at the Department said.
'Any violator of traffic rules will get punishment. We are organising awareness lectures for more than 700 Karwa bus school drivers to make them aware about mistakes they should avoid, said Major Jaber Mohamed Rashid Odaiba, Assistant Director of Media & Traffic Awareness Department .
The two-day lecture, which will conclude today, was attended yesterday by around 350 Karwa school bus drivers and supervisors at the department headquarters. They were made aware about important traffic rules and shown pictures of accidents committed last year by their colleagues so that they do not commit the same mistake. We will not give any chance to violators because we can't expose our children's lives to danger, and that is why we are giving such lectures.
Among the common mistakes committed by bus drivers are speed and not dropping students at the proper place and drop them across the road.
Also, there is a strict instruction from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education that bus drivers have to drop students at proper places and not allow them to cross the road, but some drivers don't care about it.

To make the lectures easy to understand for drivers, the department conducted it in multiple languages like English, Arabic and Urdu, Odaiba said.
The lectures are very important because we are in a new academic year, and it is a part of ‘back to school campaign', which includes visits to schools and tips to parents about traffic safety.
'One week before opening schools, we sent tips through social media to parents on how to take care of their children, he added. The Traffic Department has good coordination with Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Karwa.
Talking about the common problems faced by school bus drivers, Saleem Seed Al Hamdi, Supervisor of Karwa school bus drivers, said: 'Among the problems that we are facing is that we have to drop students in front of their homes and sometimes because of traffic jam it becomes difficult for us to do that, and need to stop in the middle of the road for a while. Other motorists click our pictures and send to traffic department to file complaints against us.
Also, only a handful of students obey rules relating to bus safety and most of them do not listen to the instructions of bus supervisors which makes the job of driver very difficult.
