Kuwait- EP suggests supervisory body on arms exports control


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Sept 13 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament (EP) adopted Wednesday a resolution stating that the EU's arms export control should be upgraded through a supervisory body, while imposing sanctions on EU member states that do not comply with minimum requirements. The resolution, which garnered the votes of 386 MEPs while 107 opposed it, expressed alarm over a global arms race and military approaches to solve political conflicts. It also critcized EU member states for violating EU's common position on arms exports .

The resolution also aims to broaden arms export criteria obliging EU member states to assess the risk of corruption caused by an arms transer.

Meanwhile, it also boosts transparency in arms export deals by providing more timely information on export licences . (end) nk.nam
