France says conditions not right for reconstruction in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Sept 12 (KUNA) -- French authorities said Tuesday that current conditions in Syria are not appropriate for reconstruction.

However, aid deliveries should absolutely continue to populations in need in that conflict, the French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Agnes Romatet-Espagne said in a press briefing.

"On reconstruction, France and its European partners have expressed their views clearly," Espagne said.

"There can be no lasting reconstruction without a clear political perspective and without a return of refugees and displaced populations," she added.

"These conditions have so far not been met," said the spokeswoman.

At least 5 million Syrian refugees have fled the country out of a pre-war population of 22.5 million and around 7 million internally displaced persons in Syria, according to UN figures.

Concerning humanitarian aid, the French official said that France has stressed the "absolute necessity" of providing this assistance and has told Russia this in their ongoing dialogue on the conflict.

Paris has called on Moscow to help ensure that humanitarian assistance is delivered in conditions that are "safe, complete, unconditional and unfettered," Espagne noted. (end) jk.ma
