Six round of Syria talks due in Astana tomorrow

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Sept 13 (KUNA) -- The sixth round of negotiations for Syria will kick off in the Kazakh capital Astana on Thursday, with participation of delegations representing the Syrian Government, the opposition and international stakeholders.

Russian news agency, Interfax, said in a report on Wednesday, citing sources in the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, that the new session would be dedicated for examining documents on supervision in low tension areas, approving maps of these regions in Idlib, Homs and East Ghouta, endorsing the coordination center charter and topics related to the panel charged with releasing prisoners.

The Syrian Government is partaking in the new round of negotiations with a delegation headed by the Permanent Envoy at the UN, Bashar Al-Jaafari. Ahmad Berri, chief of staff of the Syrian Liberation Army, would head the opposition delegation at the talks.

Turkey and Iran will partake with delegations headed by the two countries' deputy foreign ministers. As to Jordan, it would participate as an observer.

Astana had hosted five round of talks at this level, latest of which was in June, resulting in a statement signed by Russia, Turkey and Iraq, affirming necessity of abidance by the cease-fire and halting combat operations.

The new round of discussions will be held against backdrop of statements by Commander of the Russian Air Force in Syria, Lieutenant General Aleksandr Lapin, saying that the Syrian Government forces, with support of the Russian troops, liberated 85 percent of Syrian territories from armed groups.

However, he said the so-called Islamic State remains in control of 72,000 square kilometers of the Syrian lands, vowing to carry on with the armed campaign against it and Al-Nusra Front until its annihilation.

Al-Nusra Front, like the IS (also known as Daesh), is an affiliate of the mother movement, Al-Qaeda. (end) as.rk
