(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- A two-day Oman Workplace Safety and Loss Prevention Conference began under the patronage of H E Sheikh Khalid bin Omar bin Said al Marhoon, Minister of Civil Service at Crowne Plaza Muscat on Tuesday.
Organised under the auspices of Ministry of Oil and Gas, the workshop is being attended by over 150 delegates from Oman and abroad.
Fourteen papers are being presented at the conference.
Eng Samara Salah, director of Training at Samara Training Services, said that the event has received support and participation from major government organisations who have a stake in workplace safety as part of Oman's National Development Agenda.
The event is also seeing the participation of firms from the oil and gas, construction, infrastructure and healthcare sectors.
Reviewing and enhancing workplace safety standards is a highlight of the conference.
Sadiq Ahmed Khan, managing director of Tafani Events and Research also spoke on the importance of safety standards in organisations.
Some of the other issues being discussed are construction site safety, cost of lower back injuries and illnesses in industry, cost of heat stress, medical emergency preparedness in organisations, Omanisation in safety jobs, human factors and errors amongst others.
Officials from the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL), Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Oman Society of Engineers (OSE) and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) also spoke on various aspects of workplace safety.
'Oman has highest number of road accidents in GCC'
Oman recorded the highest number of road accidents in the GCC last year, said Musallam al Mandhary, CEO, Oman Society for Petroleum Services at the Oman Workplace Safety and Loss Prevention Conference on Tuesday.
'In Oman, deaths due to road accidents are high. The GCC Secretariat information office stated that Oman led the way with 4,721 accidents followed by Saudi Arabia (4,609) and Qatar (4,322) in 2016.
'The number of accidents in Oman was 8.89 per 100,000 people in 2016 compared to 8.71 per 100,000 people in 2015 as per the ROP,' Mandhary added.
