Egypt to increase corn farming area to cut reliance on imports

(MENAFN) Egypt plans to enhance its corn farming area by two thirds by the coming year and 2019 in order to help cut the nation's reliance on imports.

Accordingly, it aimed growing the farming area by 800.000 feddans to bring the whole area to 2mn feddans by the end of June 2019.

Furthermore, Egypt would offer farmers about twice as much per ton for their corn this year at USD192.96.

The country is one of the world's biggest buyers of corn but has been trying to cut its dependence on imports after a shortage of foreign currency.
