India has announced new efforts to cooperate with Japan on promoting connectivity, infrastructure and capacity-building, the Straits Times .
The cooperation is seen as a competing initiative to the Chinese-led China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which aims to link western China to the Arabian Sea.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will meet with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, on a state trip to India this week, where the two are expected to sign a series of accords.
"Cooperation in civil nuclear energy and in defense are two domains that portend the future direction of our ties," Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar was quoted as saying at an event last Friday. "The difference that Japan can make to our nuclear industry can be quite substantive. Japan's openness to supply India with military technology reflects the high level of confidence that the two countries have developed in each other."
