Jordan- PM receives Japanese foreign minister

Amman, Sept. 10 (Petra) -- Prime Minister, Hani Mulki, on Sunday, received Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, and said Jordan and Japan are boned by strategic relations.

The prime minister expressed appreciation for Japan's support and technical assistance, which contribute to the development process in Jordan.

Mulki highlighted burdens and economic challenges facing Jordan due regional instability and the closure of borders, especially the Syrian crisis and its repercussions on key sectors such as health, education, water, infrastructure and unemployment.

He noted that Jordan, which is fulfilling its duty on behalf of the international community in hosting refugees and provide them with basic services, deserves appreciation and support of the international community to continue its humanitarian role in this regard.

The premier pointed to the importance of increasing cooperation and coordination between the private sectors in Jordan and Japan to build partnerships to contribute to the reconstruction of Syria and Iraq after they restore calm and stability.

The Japanese minister said his country appreciates Jordan's role in in promoting security and stability in the region and understands burdens the Kingdom holds as a result of hosting refugees, underlining the importance of the international community's contribution in finding solutions to these challenges.

He expressed his country's keenness to attract more Japanese investments to Jordan and increase the number of Japanese tourists coming to the Kingdom.

The Prime Minister discussed with the Japanese Foreign Minister a number of issues of common concern, including the war on terrorism and the importance of defeating it in any region in the world.

The meeting saw the signing of an exchange of memoranda between the Jordanian and Japanese governments, under which the Japanese government provides a 1 billion yen grant (about $9 million) to the Jordanian government, to finance the purchase of various equipment and security systems for the Public Security Department (PSD).

The memoranda were signed on behalf of the Jordanian government by the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Imad Fakhoury and on behalf of the Japanese government by Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, Shuichi Sakurai, in the presence of a number of officials from the Japanese embassy in Amman.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs, Ayman Safadi.
