Egypt- 10 alleged militants killed in large scale Giza raid

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) At least 10 alleged militants were killed in clashes with police forces on Sunday during a security raid on a number of suspected hideouts in three crowded neighbourhoods of Giza, Ard Al-Lewa, Al-Talbyia, and Al-Abyad Street.

Five policemen, three officers and two soldiers, were injured during what is thought to be an exchange of fire. The injured personnel were hospitalised in a nearby police affiliated hospital.

State media reported that Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadek ordered officials to start investigating the operation, as well as questioning the injured policemen.

Preliminary investigations, as published by state media, said that the National Security apparatus received intelligence about a hideout where the alleged militants took refuge in a residential flat in Al-Abyad Street.

The official narrative says that upon approaching the hideouts, an IED exploded leading to injuries among police members of the raid, and the killing of the militants. Reports say that eight militants were killed in Al-Abyad Street, while two militants were killed in Ard Al-Lewa.

Media reports say that the suspects were members of the militant group of Hasm, an entity whom Egypt's police have been fighting since the beginning of 2016. The latest major attack by Hasm was the Tanta bombing on 1 April, which took place near a security forces training camp. The attack killed one lower-ranking police officer. Twelve other police officers and two civilians were wounded.

Dozens alleged members of the group have been killed in clashes with police forces.
In July, the Ministry of Interior said that it killed four alleged militants in an exchange of fire in 6th of October City. According to the ministry, the alleged militants were belonging to Hasm.

In August 2016, the group said it was behind the failed assassination of former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa. In October of the same year, the group claimed responsibility for an attempt to assassinate assistant General-Prosecutor Zakareya Abdel Aziz in New Cairo. The , executed by a car bomb, left one civilian injured, while Abdel Aziz survived the attempt.

In the same year, supreme army leader Adel Ragaai was shot in front of his residence located in Al-Obour City, where militants driving a black private vehicle opened fire on him. Two bullets pierced his head. A group called 'Lewaa El Thawra' claimed responsibility for the operation.

Moreover, the group claimed responsibility in December 2016 for a in Giza that claimed the lives of six police personnel and injured three others.

Although the militant insurgency has been predominantly active in North Sinai, militant attacks targeting public facilities, as well as police and army facilities and personnel, have spilled out of the restive peninsula, often in the form of drive-by shootings and IED attacks.
