As the siege countries have dragged universities and other educational institutions into political matters violating basic human right of education, Qatar National Human Rights Committee (QNHRC) has once again asked the blockade countries to respect international laws guaranteeing rights of students.
'Education is one of the basic human rights and these rights are granted by laws to all people regardless of any kind of political, economical, social or cultural differences or disputes, said the QNHRC, adding that this right is 'protected by the international laws and conventions ratified by all UN members including the countries violating these rights.
When the blockade countries cut ties with Qatar on June 5 and imposed air, land and sea blockade on Qatar, they also asked Qatari citizens in their countries and their citizens in Qatar to leave within 14 days, including students, patients, businessmen, mixed family members and owners of livestock.
'A total of 919 students at different levels of education were forced to discontinue their studies because of the crisis and measures taken by the siege countries, said QNHRC in a report issued on the eve of the new academic year.
The report reveals that as many as 213 Qatari students were forced to discontinue their education in United Arab Emirates (130 students), Saudi Arabia (55 students) and Bahrain (28 students), as well 706 students were forced by their countries to discontinue their education in Qatar University.
The Committee received complaints from students affected by decisions of the countries imposing siege on Qatar, as these countries banned universities and education institutions to deal with deported Qatari students who even could not get back the money they paid to these universities.
Universities in UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain refused to provide these students with admission certificates or proofs refusing to respond to their enquires and those graduated ones could not receive their graduation certificates, said the Committee. Some of the students were in their last semester and some of them had paid considerable amounts in private universities specially those who were in universities based in the UAE.
Violations to the rights to education have been documented by the committee which complained to the concerned UN organisations including the Unesco, UN Human Rights Commissioner and other human rights organisations in Europe and America.
QNHRC repeatedly urged the blockade countries to leave political disputes aside and respect the rights to education and let these students continue their education removing all restrictions have been imposed.
