Washington, Dhu-AlHijjah 18, 1438, Sep 9, 2017, SPA -- Hurricane Irma, which has again been downgraded to the second-highest category of 4, has lost strength moving over Cuba on it's way to the south-east US state of Florida.
According to dpa, Irma was moving west-north-west early Saturday over an archipelago of small islands off the northern coast of Cuba at about 19 kilometres per hour (kph).
The storm, which now has maximum sustained winds of 250 kph, was expected to turn more towards the north late Saturday, likely reaching the Florida Keys by Sunday morning.
"Some fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or two, but Irma is expected to remain a powerful hurricane as it approaches Florida," the US National Hurricane Center said in its advisory.
Irma, which has been described as one of the strongest storms ever to impact the region, had already weakened to a category 4 hurricane before returning to category 5 strength late Friday with maximum sustained winds of 260 kph.
