US government announces four new FMS to Bahrain


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- The US State Department announced Friday Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to Bahrain for F-16s, F-16 upgrades, naval patrol boats and TOW missiles.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency indicated in a statement that the estimated cost of the F-16V aircraft with support is estimated at USD 2.78 billion, whereas the FMS for upgrade of F-16 Block 40 aircraft to F-16V configuration is estimated at USD 1.082 billion.

The cost of 35 Meter Fast Patrol Boats is estimated cost at USD 60.25 million and the cost of tow missiles, equipment and support is estimated at USD 27 million, it added.

The Agency affirmed that these proposed sales "will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major Non-NATO ally, which has been and continues to be an important security partner in the region." It added that these proposed sales improve "Bahrain's capability to meet current and future threats," and that Bahrain "will use the capability as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen its homeland defense." According to the Agency, it delivered the required certification notifying Congress of these possible sales today.

It stressed that these notices of a potential sale "is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded." (end) si.lb
