When police in Ramganj (Rajasthan) detained a youth yesterday under Section 60 of the Police Act (punishment of certain offences on road), little did they know it would turn into their worst nightmare.

The family of the youth soon created a scene and in the confusion, a stick carried by the cop allegedly hit a woman.

A mob gathered, pelted stones and damaged property.

After the youth was detained, cops took him to the station to complete formalities; he would have been released afterwards.

Meanwhile, his family reached. They allegedly started pressurizing police and the youth too misbehaved.

In the melee, a stick being carried by a cop hit a female relative who was abusing verbally.

The family then rushed out and started shouting cops had hit them.

Soon a mob gathered. "Suddenly stone pelting started…stones were hurled at the police station."

Rioters damaged the police jeep and set afire the 108 ambulance parked at the station. Some cops were injured. Police were called from other stations but they couldn't stop the violence.

Eventually, senior officials arrived. Shots were fired in the air and the mob was brought under control.
