As sympathy for persecuted Rohingya Muslims grows across the globe, people in Qatar are also generously contributing to victims' relief efforts on charity organisations calls.
Social media is playing a key role in highlighting the plight of Rohingya Muslims who are fleeing their country due to violence in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state last month.
Qatar Charity (QC) is waging a campaign to collect donations to provide urgent humanitarian aid food baskets and shelters for the victims of violence in Rakhine.
Under the campaign 'Burma Tastaghis (Burma needs relief), QC has launched a drive for collecting donation through mobile text message. To make contribution through SMS, the donors are required to write MMA and send to 92632 for donating QR50 and to 92642 for QR100. For donating big amounts like QR500 and QR1,000, the donors can send MMA to 92428 and 92429 respectively.
The donation could be made online through the website of the QC 'qcharity.org or its landline number 44667711. The donors could approach in person the offices of Qatar Charity and its donation collection points available at the markets and shopping complexes across the country.
However, an official from Qatar Charity told The Peninsula that donation collectors deputed by QC at public places are on vacation of Eid Al Adha. As the donation collectors of QC will resume their duties after Eid vacations, the officials think they will see more donors in coming days.
Under the ongoing campaign, QC has already earmarked QR156,000 in phase-1 to dispatch basic food stuffs like rice, lentils, edible oil, milk and canned foods to rescue Rohingya Muslims. More than 4,700 people are expected to benefit from the project.
Qatar Charity has also planned to set up five wooden shelters in Rakhine at a cost of QR100,000. Each shelter can house eight families and will cost QR20,000. The project will provide shelters to 40 families comprising 240 people.
To make the contribution, many people are going to donation boxes placed by local charities and humanitarian organizations at shopping malls and other public places across the country.
'I have watched a number of videos on my social media accounts and it is heinous crime to kill innocent people including children, women and old people, Abdurrashid, a Pakistani national told The Peninsula.
He was looking for donation collectors or a box for helping Rohingya Muslims at a shopping center.
'Following the appeal for help on social media, I came here to make some contribution because this is what we can do for the ill-fated people of Rakhine, he added.
Few days ago, Qatar condemned the violent attacks on the Rohingya Muslims in the state of Rakhine in Myanmar which left dozens of people dead and thousands more displaced.
An estimated 123,000 refugees have arrived in Bangladesh since violence broke out in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state last month, said a report posted on the website of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
'UNHCR is gravely concerned about the continuing conflict in Myanmar and by reports that civilians have died trying to reach safety. It is of utmost urgency to address the root causes of the recent surge in violence so that people are no longer compelled to flee and can eventually return home in safety and dignity, it adds.
