Federer beats Mikhail Youzhny in thrilling five setter

Roger Federer recorded his 80th US Open win against Mikhail Youzhny in the second round on Thursday.

It was the second successive five-setter for the 36-year-old Federer at the US Open.

Youzhny gave the Swiss a scare by winning the second and third sets, but Federer eventually managed to win 6-1, 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the end.


19-year-old Andrey Rublev upsets Grigor Dimitrov
Dimitrov ousted


Rublev pulled off a major upset over Belgian seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov to progress to the third round.

The Russian youngster, who is ranked 53rd in the world, registered a straight set, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, victory over Dimitrov.

He is the second teenager to have progressed to the third round this year after 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov of Canada.


Nadal, Thiem progress to the round of 32
Other seeded players


Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem progressed to the third round of the US Open after registering a 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over the 19-year-old Taylor Fritz.

In a stalwart defensive display, Thiem saved 16 of 18 break points he faced.

Top seeded Nadal, as well, dropped one set in his second round match against Taro Daniel as he won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.


Women play longest match
Longest match


25th-seeded Australian Daria Gavrilova and American Shelby Rogers set a new record as they played out the longest ever women's singles match.

The clash which saw Rogers win 7-6 (8/6), 4-6, 7-6 (7/5) lasted 3hr 33min and thus surpassed the record time (3hr 23min) Johanna Konta took to beat Garbine Muguruza two years ago.

The final set itself lasted 90 minutes.


Pliskova progresses while Wozniacki is ousted
Women's singles


19-year-old Naomi Osaka continued her dream run at the US Open as she followed up her win over Angelique Kerber with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Denisa Allertova.

Top seed Karolina Pliskova also progressed through after coming back from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Nicole Gibbs.

Meanwhile, fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki lost 2-6, 7-6, 1-6 to Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
