Weather forecasters at the Observatory will consider whether to issue a low-level alert – a standby signal no. 1 – later on Friday, as the third typhoon in two weeks gets nearer to Hong Kong.
The latest forecast at 10.15am indicated that tropical cyclone Mawar may take a more northerly track towards the eastern coast of Guangdong province and remain slow-moving initially while keeping a distance from Hong Kong, a special posted on the Observatory website said.

The weather monitors expect Mawar will intensify progressively and cross the coast of eastern Guangdong on Sunday.
Weather in Hong Kong will turn bad progressively from late Saturday and on Sunday, with heavy rain and strong wind.
Forecasters in Macau, meanwhile, issued typhoon signal no. 1 at 7pm on Thursday and said a typhoon signal no. 3 was highly expected on Saturday night, am730 reported.
This will be the third big storm in a fortnight. Typhoon Hato caused flooding in Hong Kong and more destruction in Macau on August 23, while severe tropical storm Pakhar hit both cities four days later.
