Qatar University College of Medicine (QU-CMED) student Samer Haitham Ali contributed, along with his peer Fatima Al Maadeed from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), to the establishment of the Medicine Students Committee in Qatar.
The committee has been granted an official membership in a consensus decision made for the first time by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) since its establishment in 1951.
This success was achieved due to the hard work and dedication of the students from CMED and WCM-Q.
The membership is beneficial for medicine and health students at QU. It will provide them with the opportunity to meet and interact with their peers from 126 countries.
They will also have the opportunity to unlock their potential and enhance their knowledge and skills through a wide range of workshops, seminars, student exchange programs, and research collaborations.
Commenting on this achievement, QU Vice-President for Medical and Health Sciences and CMED Dean, Dr Egon Toft, said: 'Students from the College of Medicine, Qatar University initiated and led the initiation of the Medicine Students Committee in Qatar and the initial discussions and negotiations with the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA). The Medicine Students Committee in Qatar is a joint organisation for the country and is the partner that has now got a seat in IFMSA. We are proud that our students have led this initiative that is now a fully approved national joint association with the participation of CMED and WCM-Q for the benefit of the whole country.
Samer Haitham Ali said: 'The IFMSA membership encouraged us to establish the Medicine Students Committee in Qatar as a formal student organization in Qatar. The committee is expected to kick off in September 2017, and we will work closely with IFMSA to establish many research and students initiatives.
