Abe, Trump agree to increase pressure on N. Korea


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, Aug 29 (KUNA) -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday agreed to further strengthen pressure on N North Korea following its launch of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan earlier in the day.

During their 40-minute telephone conversation, the two leaders shared the view that the latest launch posed an unprecedented, grave and serious threat, Abe told reporters after the telephone talks. Abe and Trump also agreed to seek an emergency session of the UN Security Council immediately, while stressing the importance of the roles playing by China and Russia in dealing with the North.

Trump told Abe that the US stands 100 percent behind its ally Japan, according to the premier. Their talks came after North Korea fired a ballistic missile from its west coast at 05:58 a.m. (20:58 GMT Monday) that flew over Japan before falling into the Pacific Ocean. It flew more than 2,700 km at a maximum altitude of around 550 km, according to the Japanese government. (end) mk.gta
