Oman- MoSD rescues abused boy


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) has rescued a boy who was abused by his stepmother.

In a statement issued on its official Twitter accounton Monday, MoSD said, 'Our child protection hotline 1100 received a complaint about a 12 year old boy who was repeatedly assaulted. He was subjected to physical abuse and inhuman treatment. There were injury marks on his body after his stepmother assaulted him when he tried to escape from the house. He was rescued from the house by ministry and security officials, and provided medical care. The boy has been sent to Dar al Wifaq centre.'

Giving further details of the case, the ministry said, 'The child's stepmother abused him regularly and forced him to do household work. She would thrash him if he refused to do so.'

The ministry has thanked all those who report complaints of child abuse. 'We are committed to protecting children irrespective of their nationality.'

MoSD has said that it received 91 child abuse cases in the first quarter of 2017. Of these, 12 were reported directly by the children, while 79 were reported by people related to the affected children. 'Of the total 91 cases, 23 concerned physical abuse, 20 for psychological abuse, nine for sexual abuse and 39 for neglect,' Shams bint Said Hamoud al Hajri, director of Family Protection Department in MoSD, told Muscat Daily.

The ministry dealt with 299 cases of child abuse in 2016.
