Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali Al Hammadi yesterday welcomed the largest batch of Qatari teachers who will soon enter the class room for the 2017/2018 academic year.
The Minister told 164 educators at a reception held at Rotana City Center that improving the teaching profession is the Ministry's first priority, adding that this commitment led it to work towards creating a respectable work environment for teachers.
The Ministry focused building capacities of teachers through training, guaranteeing their career advancement in order to help them transmit their expertise to the classrooms efficiently. That in turn will help students to promote innovation and encourage them to develop their talents, he added.
This is the biggest batch of Qatari teachers joining the profession. The new teachers are graduates of the Tumooh program which is run by the Ministry of Education in cooperation with College of Education at the Qatar university, 'Teach for Qatar program and 'Assistant Teacher program of the Community College of Qatar (CCQ). This reception for new teachers was held for the third consecutive year in acknowledgement of the teachers' role and to encourage them to join teaching.
Speaking at the event, the Minister outlined the ministry's new vision to aid teachers in their efforts of giving their best and improving the academic achievements of students in various stages.
He said that having Qatari teachers represents the first step in self-reliance, as their mission is to help the new generation acquire the needed knowledge and principles. He added that this was a great responsibility given that Qatari teachers were more aware of the society and its culture.
The Minister said that this aspect helps Qatari teachers have a unique impact in their nation and the new generation.
The Minister said the Ministry also launched various teacher-related programmes to improve their capabilities and efficiency including adoption of policies and plans that ensure improving the performance of teachers. The programmes also include teachers in the decision-making process, by forming a consultative committee of teachers.
Addressing the new teachers, the Minister said: 'Your choice of entering the teaching career now is unique in nature. This is because it followed the invitation of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in the speech which laid a road map on how to deal with current development, which focused in relying on the Qatari capabilities through independent thinking, working hard, innovation and gathering knowledge in different scientific fields. These qualities required are some of the responsibilities that the educational process assume, he stressed.
The Minister said he was adamant that Qatar and its people were capable now more than in the past to realise Qatar National Vision 2030 under the wise leadership of the Emir and the directives of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani. The Minister of Education said that the new Qatari teachers completed three leading programmes in the field of education. Those programmes were prepared by the Ministry of Education in cooperation with Qatar University and CCQ.
The Minister said these programmes had become part of the academic curricula at the specialised colleges. Only the Qatari students of the highest quality join it, to contribute with their abilities in raising the new generation and preparing it in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
The Minister said that there were a number of policies undertaken to improve the teaching quality in the country. Those policies included the application of permit for school teachers, in addition to publishing a document on professional conduct for workers in the educational field. He confirmed that the ministry will continue to work on the quality of education to provide a leading service for the Qatari society. He said that the honest efforts of teachers will aid the ministry's commitment to improving all aspects of educational process whether teachers, students, curriculum, or the learning environment in schools.
He said that the Ministry is assuming a number of challenges such as building human capital, the process of transforming into an economy based on innovation, improving competitiveness, establishing a welfare state, all in line with Qatar National Vision. He added that these challenge requires that Qatar provide for its needs in terms of the necessary knowledge and skills required for the 21st century, in light of the global changes and its potential impact. He said that another important priority for the ministry was to attract teaching talent and retain them in the school, in order to build national capacities in the educational sector.
He said that the ministry is following innovative ways to pursue these priorities, by establishing a comprehensive administration system for teachers and school workers that includes incentive mechanisms.
