Qatar- Russia throws weight behind Kuwait initiative

Starting his three-nation Gulf tour yesterday in Kuwait to mitigate diplomatic tensions in the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said yesterday that Russia fully supported the Kuwaiti initiative.

'Moscow is not planning to vie with anyone in settling the crisis between Qatar and a number of Arab states, Lavrov said, Russian news agency TASS reported.

Lavrov yesterday met the Emir of Kuwait, H H Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah. Lavrov's visit to Kuwait is the first high-level diplomatic visit by a Russian leader over the current Gulf crisis. Lavrov is the eighth foreign minister to visit the Gulf to break the diplomatic logjam by supporting the Kuwaiti initiative to resolve the Gulf crisis through dialogue.
'We support the Kuwaiti initiative, we do not want to vie with anyone, Lavrov said, adding: 'We have good relations with all countries that found themselves in such a difficult situation.

'We strongly believe that Kuwait's initiative deserves the support of all those who can generate a positive impact on this situation. We are ready to provide this support in any mode that will be acceptable to all participants in this situation, Lavrov stressed, TASS reported.

The Emir of Kuwait received Lavrov at Seif Palace yesterday in the presence of Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, official news agency of Kuwait, KUNA reported.

The meeting was attended by First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah, Adviser at the Emiri Diwan Mohammad Dhaifallah Sharar and Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Suleiman Al Jarallah.
Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah also met his Russian counterpart for talks.

Sheikh Sabah and Lavrov also dissected numerous issues of mutual concern in a meeting that brought together a bevy of Kuwaiti and Russian diplomats. Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah also met Lavrov and his accompanying delegation.

They reviewed relations between Kuwait and Russia at all levels and highlighted developments at the regional and international levels. The meeting was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Suleiman Al Jarallah, Head the Prime Minister's Diwan, Sheikha Etmad Khaled Al Ahmad Al Sabah and Assistant Foreign Minister for Europe Affairs, Ambassador Waleed Ali Al Khubaizi.

Lavrov said implementation of bilateral agreements signed during the Kuwaiti Emir's 2015 visit to Russia would see further progress.

Lavrov, during a meeting with the Emir at Seif Palace, conveyed greetings of Russian President Vladimir Putin and said the Kremlin leader remembered dearly the Emir's visit.

He noted that First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah visited Russia last year and they discussed a host of issues and bilateral relations.
