Qatar- Widam Food to airlift 12,500 sacrificial Syrian lambs from Lebanon

Widam Food, Qatar's premium meat and food supplying company, will import some 12,500 lambs to be sacrificed during Eid Al Adha. The Syrian lambs will be airlifted from Lebanon given the current situation in Syria and the suspension of land road link due to the ongoing siege.

The especially imported Arabian sheep/lambs by air, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, will be sold to Qatari citizens at a subsidised price of QR1,100 each head of the sacrificial animals. The sale of sheep has already started from Saturday, and will continue until the third day of Eid Al Adha.

Beneficiaries, whose age should not be less than 18 years, must show their original Qatari IDs at sale points. Only one sheep will be given to a customer. Ali bin Mohammed Al Obaidli, Chairman of Wadam Food company expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the government for its efforts for providing all the needful support despite the ongoing siege which is going to complete three months in a week's time.

He said that the initiative of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce comes to the fifth year in coordination with Widam Food Company to provide Arabian sheep and sell them to citizens for their convenience.

Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Khayarin, Chief Executive Officer of Widam Food, has revealed that with the support of some government agencies a detailed plan has been put in place for the smooth and successful implementation of animal sacrifices during this Eid Al Adha.

Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Khayarin, Chief Executive Officer of Widam Food, reiterated that all preparations have been made well in advance for the hassle-free execution of animal sacrifices during this season, and expressed his optimism and confidence to serve the people in a much better way in an appropriate atmosphere throughout the working hours from 5am to 5pm.

He also confirmed that the number animal heads allocated under the initiative would be enough to meet the demand, and will have positive impact on the local livestock market and will help stabilise it to maintain a right balance.

Al Khayarin also noted that Widam has complied with all the criteria set by the authorities concerned for purchasing of the appropriate kind of sacrificial animals, which include specific types, species, weights and health conditions.

'To meet all these criteria of the animals, the company took help of specialised staff, including a group of veterinarians, Al Khayarin was quoted as saying by Lusail newspaper. He highlighted that the government is taking important steps by launching several initiatives to support local livestock farm owners and traders to make their products more competitive to achieve self-sufficiency and food security in the country in the long run.

He said that automated abattoirs will sacrifice some 200 animals per hour, and the installed capacity is estimated to be sufficient to meet the demand during this season.

Australian sheep, which will be available to all customers at a price of QR350 plus QR10 as slaughter fee, can be submitted for slaughter only at the automated abattoir at the central market. Sale coupons will be available from Wednesday at all selling outlets and customers need to show their receipts at the automated abattoir for slaughter.
