Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh will be sentenced in a rape case today at 2:30 pm at a court near Rohtak.

When he was convicted two days ago, supporters went on a rampage. At least 38 people were killed and hundreds injured.

To prevent another massacre, security has been upped drastically.

The 'guru' is accused of more than rape
Conviction


On August 25, a CBI court held Ram Rahim guilty of sexually exploiting two women 15 years ago at the Dera headquarters.

The case had come to light when an anonymous letter was sent to then PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee detailing the crimes. People who worked to reveal the crimes were later found murdered.

Since then, he has been lodged in a Rohtak jail.


Jagdeep Singh, the judge who convicted him, emerged as hero

CBI special court judge Jagdeep Singh who had convicted Ram Rahim for the crime will also be the one to pronounce quantum of punishment. He will be flown to Rohtak by a chopper; he is scheduled to arrive at around 11:30am.


After the verdict, Haryana was held at ransom

After the verdict, Dera supporters went on a rampage, destroying property and setting ablaze trains and buses.

Petrol pumps were damaged and journalists attacked in Panchkula, where the judgement was pronounced. Delhi, Rajasthan, UP and Jammu also had to bear the brunt.

The Punjab and Haryana HC rebuked the BJP government for allowing Haryana to burn for political gains.


To prevent a repeat, Rohtak becomes a virtual fortress
Security


Thousands of paramilitary and police personnel have been deployed in and around Rohtak. The army is on standby. Forces have been allowed to shoot if necessary.

Panchkula, Sirsa and even UP and Punjab are on high alert. Curfew has been imposed in some places.

There will be no movement allowed of people within 10km of Sonaria. Dera followers won't be allowed to enter Rohtak.


Life in the national capital region affected too

Though schools remain open in Delhi, they have been shut in Noida and Ghaziabad. Delhi Police rubbished reports that there are traffic restrictions. However, mobile internet services have been suspended in Haryana and Punjab till 11:30am tomorrow.


More than 900 people have been arrested till now
Action


Over 900 people have been arrested in Haryana over the violence. Sedition and attempt to murder charges have been slapped against seven, including five Haryana police cops, for allegedly trying to free Ram Rahim after the verdict.

Haryana Deputy Advocate General Gurdass Singh Salwara was fired as he was seen holding the guru's suitcase.

Vehicles from his cavalcade were also impounded.
