Jordan- Iraqi army declares liberation of Tal Afar

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Baghdad, Aug 27 (Petra) –– A top Iraqi military commander Sunday said that the town of Tal Afar in the Nineveh Prince was in Iraqi hands after a week of fighting to drive out the Daesh terror group from its last stronghold in the northwest of the country.

Lt. Gen. Riyad Tawfik, the commander of land forces in the Iraqi army, said in a statement that his troops had achieved major victories and "will continue to advance until the full liberation of Tal Afar district, including the Ayadiyeh region west of the town".

Tal Afar, which was home to about 200,000 people, had been under Daesh control since 2014. Many of its inhabitants have fled and an estimated 70,000 remained and were taken by the terror group as human shields, who were prevented from leaving the town.
