Man held in UAE for cheating residents with 'cheap rents' offer

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Police have arrested an Asian man for cheating residents with offers of cheap apartments for rents. The suspect advertised the 'cheap' apartments on classified ad websites.

According to the police, the suspect would advertise "great offers" for studio apartments in Sharjah. After residents called him up on the number he put up along with the ad, he would take them to newly constructed studio apartments. He would say these were just a "sample" of the actual apartment they would be given, and asked for an advance amount to "book" their flats.

He claimed he needed to book the flat "due to their increasing popularity". He told them that he would use the money for connecting the flat to the utilities network of the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority. After collecting the cash, he would switch off his phone.

After receiving multiple complaints at different police stations, the police launched an investigation. The police managed to arrest the suspect despite the fact that he was using a fake name and different phone numbers to commit the crime.

According to the police, the suspect swindled a "lot of cash" from residents. The police didn't, however, release the exact amount he swindled.

Police investigations revealed that the suspect forged leasing contracts and receipts and issued them to his unsuspecting clients. Several victims have identified the suspect at different police stations, said the police.

The police have urged other victims to come forward if they have been scammed in a similar fashion. They also urged the public to be careful when dealing with online advertisements.
