India urges Gulf countries to resolve row through dialogue

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, Aug 26 (KUNA) -- India on Saturday urged several Gulf countries to resolve their differences through constructive dialogue and peaceful negotiations amid a diplomatic stand off between Qatar and four Arab nations.

This came during delegation level talks between India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Qatar's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who arrived in New Delhi on Friday amid a two-day visit.

The Indian side insisted that "peace and security in the Gulf are of paramount importance for the continued progress and prosperity of the region," according to a statement after the talks.

Terrorism, violent extremism and religious intolerance pose a grave threat not only to regional stability but also to global peace and order, the statement read.

"India is of the view that parties should resolve their differences through a process of constructive dialogue and peaceful negotiations," said minister Swaraj.

Later, Sheikh Mohamed briefed his Indian counterpart on the political and security situations in the Gulf region.

The two officials also discussed plans for a number of bilateral, regional and international issues.

For its part, the Qatari side assured the safety and well-being of Indian workers in Qatar, around 630,000, which is the largest expatriate group in the country.

Meanwhile, India said it appreciates Qatar's role in helping safeguard New Delhi's energy security as the largest LNG supplier and the Qatari minister pledged to continue his country's commitment to uninterrupted energy supplies.

The visiting Qatari Foreign Minister also handed over a letter from the Amir of Qatar to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held talks with India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. (end) atk.sd
