Hilsha receives certificate as GI product


(MENAFN- Bangladesh Monitor) DHAKA : 'At least one famous product from every district of the country will get Geographical Indicator (GI) status and will be recognised internationally.'

'Just as we proved Jamdani Saree and Hilsha to be ours, we'll prove those products as unique to us, and ours, too.'

Amir Hossain Amu, Minister for Industries, said this while formally handing over the GI certificate of national fish Hilsa to Department of Fisheries (DoF) at a ceremony in the city on August 24.

Syed Arif Azad, Director General, DoF received the certificate at a ceremony, organised by the Department of Patent, Design and Trademark (DoPDT), at CIRDAP auditorium on the day.

From now on it will be known in the world market as Bangladeshi Hilsha. Earlier Jamdani saree was registered by DoPDT as the first Bangladeshi GI product.

Narayan Chandra Chando, State Minister to the Fisheries and Livestock was present as the special guest Maksudul Hasan Khan, Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Sushen Chandra Das, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Md Sanwar Hossain, Registrar, DoPDT also spoke on the occasion.
