Summary


BWF World Championships first began in 1977 and took place every three years until 1983 when it became a bi-annual affair.

After 2005 it became an annual event with the exception being made in Olympic years. The 2015 World Championships defending champions are Chen Long (MS), and Carolina Marin (WS).

The 2017 edition of the tournament is being held from 21st-27th Aug in Scotland.

Apart from the regular suspects PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, Rituparna Das and Tanvi Lad will represent India in Women's Singles at BWF World Championships.

In Men's Singles event, Kidambi Srikanth, Ajay Jayaram, B Sai Praneeth, and Sameer Verma will compete.

Doubles pairs include the likes of Manu Attri/Sumeeth Reddy (Men's), Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (Men's), Ashwini Ponnappa/Sikki Reddy (Women's), along with six more pairs.


No gold at World Championships for India till now

World Badminton Championships gold has been elusive to India for long.

The last Indian to win a medal here was Saina Nehwal who won the silver medal at 2015 Championships.

Others who clinched the medals previously include - bronze in 1983 by Prakash Padukone, bronze in 2011 by Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa, consecutive bronze medals by PV Sindhu, in 2013, and 2014.

PV Sindhu, Rituparna Das, Tanvi Lad, Ajay Jayaram, Sameer Verma, won their opening matches in singles. Further mixed doubles pair Sikki Reddy/ Pranaav Jerry Chopra too advanced to the next round. However, two other mixed doubles pairs, Sumeeth Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa, Satwiksairaj/Maneesha, were ousted.

Indian shuttlers continued their winning strak at the World Badminton Championships Singles, with latest victories coming from Sai Praneeth and Saina Nehwal.

In contrasting ways, while Saina cruised through her second round opener beating Switzerland's Sabrina Jaquet 21-11, 21-12, 15th seeded Praneeth made a thrilling come back to win 14-21, 21-18, 21-19, in 72 minutes against Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.


Kidambi Srikanth advances as Tanvi Lad loses

At the World Championships, Kidambi Srikanth registered a comfortable victory of 21-9, 21-17 over France's Lucas Corvee, in just 32 minutes, to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

On the other hand, the Indian side faced first singles defeat after Tanvi Lad lost her second round match 9-21, 19-21, to number 2 seed from Korea Sung Ji Hyun.
