Kuwaiti citizen gets 7-year jail in screwdriver stabbing

(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY, Aug 23: The Criminal Court sentenced a Kuwaiti citizen to seven-year imprisonment with hard labor for insulting, beating and stabbing an unidentified person, which resulted in five percent permanent disability to the latter. The court has referred the case to the concerned civil circuit. The Public Prosecution had charged the suspect of deliberately causing the permanent disability as described in the medical report.

According to the case file, the suspect insulted the victim in a public place following an argument. When the victim left the place, the suspect chased him with his car. He stopped the victim along a highway and stabbed him with screwdriver several times. Passersby came to the rescue before the suspect drove off.

Representing the victim was Lawyer Zayed Al-Khabbaz who affirmed that the charges against the defendant are sadly true. He said investigations have confirmed the statements of the victim and the attacks of the defendant on him, which resulted in permanent disability. Lawyer Al-Khabbaz stressed that the confession of the defendant removes all doubts about his role in the heinous crime, urging the court to give maximum punishment and oblige the defendant to pay compensation worth KD 5,001 to his client.

Dad wins custody: The Court of Appeals overturned the verdict issued by the Family Court which awarded a mother the custody of her children and obliged the father to provide for the welfare of the children. The appellate court instead awarded custody to the father and ordered the mother to handover the children to their father. The mother had sued her estranged husband and demanded custody of their children as well as child support and family maintenance worth KD 300 monthly and additional KD 1,000 for buying furniture. The defense counsel Lawyer Mubarak Al-Khashab appealed the verdict of the Family Court, stressing that the court had misruled as it did not consider the evident violations committed by the plaintiff who had relinquished custody to her mother (the children's maternal grandmother). Through that, the custody had been given to someone out of the lawsuit and dispute.

Defamation suit filed: Lawyer Abdul-Mohsin Al-Mousa filed complaint number 3018/17 against Kuwaiti blogger and political activist Abdullah Al-Nafisi at the Public Prosecution Department accusing the latter of repeated deliberate attacks on the United Arab Emirates and her leaders in a way that contradicts decent method of criticism. The legal practitioner deems the action of Al-Nafisi an offense that could strain sisterly tie between Kuwait and UAE, indicating his action is constitutionally forbidden. He accused the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for lackluster attitude toward Al-Nafisi, which he stressed, is not in the best interest of the country — in view of the current situation in the region. He observed Al-Nafisi acted in a way that is capable of jeopardizing efforts of HH the Amir to resolve the impasse among some GCC member States to ensure restoration of unity and stability within the region, noting he is waiting for the Prosecutor General to invite Al-Nafisi for questioning and proper investigation. He was particular about Al-Nafisi posting certain tweet on his Twitter page August 8 whose content he considered defamatory to UAE. He stressed the act is liable to three years imprisonment — whether the culprit is a Kuwaiti or an expatriate, according to Article 15 of Law 31/1970.
