At least 23 killed, 40 injured as train derails in India
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, Aug 19 (KUNA) -- At least 23 passengers were killed while 40 others sustained serious injuries on Saturday evening following a passenger train derailment in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Quoting local officials, the Indo Asian News Agency said that 14 coaches of a train bound for Haridwar in Uttarakhand derailed near the Khatauli city in Uttar Pradesh.
Joint operations by the police and India's Disaster Response Force are currently ongoing using all means possible, including cranes and heavy gas cutters, to break open coaches as people have been trapped inside.
The police said that the death toll may go up sharply due to numbers of trapped passengers inside the crushed coaches. (end) atk.sd
