ABU DHABI, Aug 22 (KUNA) -- Egyptian player Bassem Amin on Tuesday won the top prize of the 24th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival's masters category.
Amin clinched the title after defeating veteran English player Nigel Short in the final with 7.5-7 points.
The third place was grabbed by Indian player Chopra Aryan despite tying with UAE player Salem Abdulrahman, with both scoring 6.5 points.
A total of 11 Kuwaiti players have participated in tournament's various categories.
Kuwaiti player Abdulwahab Al-Othman scored 3 points in the masters category, and Khalaf Al-Azmi got 6 points in the open category, followed by Musaad Al-Sharhan and Abdulrahman Al-Ibrahim with 5 points.
Al-Qallaf expressed confidence in the Kuwaiti players' ability to achieve more advanced places in the coming tournaments.
In statements to KUNA, Assistant Secretary General of the Kuwait Club for Mind Games Faisal Al-Qallaf expressed satisfaction of the Kuwaiti players' performances in the tournament.
Their results were good taking into account several of the world top players were competing in the tournament, Al-Qallaf said, adding that the main goal of the Kuwaiti participation with enhancing players' experience and preparing them for the upoming Chess Olympics, to be held in Georgia next year.
A total of 650 players from 57 countries participated in the tournament which kicked off on August 14. (end) bs.ibi
