Hong Kong on Wednesday morning was locked down by Typhoon Hato when the Observatory issued Typhoon Signal No 10. The Observatory warned in the morning that higher water levels were expected in some parts of the city, and serious flooding in some low-lying areas and huge waves in the coastal areas were reported.
One of the hardest-hit areas was the eastern part of the Hong Kong Island, including Hang Fa Chuen and Siu Sai Wan.

In Hang Fa Chuen, waves struck as high as 5 meters on residential buildings, and water as deep as 50 centimeters washed over the roads in the housing estate. At least 30 vehicles in the were flooded, Apple Daily reported.
Seawater also rushed into the Siu Sai Wan sport ground in Chai Wan on Hong Kong Island, flooding entrances and tracks, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.
A flood-alert system was activated in Tai O on Lantau Island as authorities feared the sea could rise almost 4 meters above normal levels. Residents were advised to move to temporary shelters with the help of police and firefighters.
At 9am, the windows of in Block 1 of Chatham Gate in Kowloon's Hung Hom were smashed after being repeatedly battered by a window-cleaning gondola that was swinging free, Oriental Daily reported. Debris and glass were blown out of the apartment and fell to the ground.
Police cordoned off the area and firefighters arrived to fix the gondola. No one was reported hurt.
The Observatory lowered the typhoon signal to No 8 at 2:10pm as Hato moved away from the city.
