U.S. to deny Egypt's USD95.7mn aid for not respecting human rights

(MENAFN) The U.S. has decided to deny Egypt USD95.7mn in help and to delay an USD195mn because of its failure to make progress on respecting human rights and democratic norms.

However, the decision reflects an U.S. desire to continue security co-op as well as frustration with Cairo's stance on civil liberties.

In addition, U.S. officials were unhappy that Egyptian President in May allowed the NGO law to go into effect, while human rights groups proclaimed that it bans their work.

Meanwhile, Egyptian officials assured U.S. officials earlier this year that the law, which restricts NGO activity to social work, would not go through.
