New Delhi, Aug 22 (KNN) Despite the accelerated pace of innovation in the country, there exists huge gap when it comes to securing the ideas and products that are a result of the innovation, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju recently said.

Rijiju said that it is important for the country to focus on Intellectual Property Rights as the country continues with its quest towards innovation in various fields.

The Minister further assured that his government is committed in evolving a robust mechanism required for having a formal Intellectual Property Rights system in the country.

Commenting on the process of litigation that exist in the country at present with reference to the IPR, the Minister said that the process is not in its best form.

'There have been cases when the police authority keeps waiting for someone to actually raise a complaint, and in many cases the honest party never turns up to formally raise the complaint and the case is therefore never addressed Rijiju said.

He added that business in the country have huge potential, and they do keep on exploring this potential to new heights, but with no proper IPR system in place, these products suffer huge damages on different fronts.

'We were recently informed that some company in the US has patented Basmati Rice, something which India has been producing for years he said.

The Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of the three day workshop on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), conducted by Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), a professional body under the aegis of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.

Key government officials including Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman were present at the event. (KNN/ DA)
