Malawian President seeks enhanced relations with Sri Lanka

Sunil de Silva, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner for South Africa presented his credentials to the President of Malawi, Arthur Peter Mutharika as the High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka residing in Pretoria to the Republic of Malawi in the Capital Lilongwe, the Foreign Ministry said today.

During the brief discussion following the Credentials Ceremony, held with the President Mutharika, the High Commissioner conveyed the greetings of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The High Commissioner was invited by the Malawian President to work towards enhancing economic and bilateral relations between the two countries.

It was the first time an envoy from Sri Lanka presented credentials in Malawi, since establishing bilateral diplomatic relations in 2013.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the High Commissioner attended a press conference and later a cultural event organized by the Sri Lankan community in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Prior to presenting credentials, the High Commissioner met the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Blantyre, the commercial capital of Malawi.

He delivered a brief speech on the progress made by the unity Government during the last two and half years and the action taken towards reconciliation between all the ethnic groups. (Colombo Gazette)
