Beirut: Australia beat Iran on Monday to the continental basketball championship, FIBA Asia Cup, which was staged in Lebanon.

The win came in 79-59 score and saw Australia take their first Asian title from the first time of asking after the Oceania and Asian federations merged.

Australia took part in the tournament with their second team as NBA players were absent and only some EuroLeague players participated alongside the domestic league players.

On the other hand, Iran missed some first team players but they failed to win their fourth title of the championship.

South Korea were third after beating New Zealand 80-71 in the third-place playoff.

Lebanon had to settle for sixth place after losing the fifth-place playoff narrowly to China 79-78.

Lebanon's retiring player Fadi El Khatib was the tournament's top scorer, averaging 25.9 points per match, while Iran's Hamed Haddadi was named the best player.
