England fast bowler Stuart Broad picked up three wickets from just eleven balls as England thrashed West Indies in the first Test match at Edgbaston.

In the process, Broad surpassed Sir Ian Botham in the list of England's all-time leading wicket-takers in Test cricket.

He is now only behind James Anderson on the list with 384 wickets in 107 matches.

England were off to a great start on the first day, courtesy of a double century by Alastair Cook and a century by captain Joe Root.

Helped by the twin centuries, England posted a mammoth total on the board.

Then, the Windies were bundled out for 168 in the first innings.

England enforced a follow-on and went on to dismiss them for 137.

Stuart Broad and James Anderson were the stars for England with the ball.

Both of them took five wickets in the match.

Broad bowled a spell of three for four in 11 balls in the second innings that saw him overtake Ian Botham's 383 wickets mark in Tests.

Anderson, with 492 wickets, is still England's all-time highest wicket-taker in Tests.

England captain Joe Root heaped praise on the duo after the Test.

"Very remarkable, very pleasing," he told Sky Sports, "We talk about being ruthless. Stuart Broad has had a fantastic career... He has those spells in him where he can turn a game on its head.

Meanwhile, Cook told BBC, "We bowled well today -- Jimmy and Broady are world class."
