Jordan- Trade unions engaged heavily in local polls, says chief

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Aug 19 (Petra) –– President of the Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions, Mazen Maytah, said Saturday that the Jordanian labour movement is proud that the Kingdom had successfully held municipal and local council elections as a key national achievement along the path of political reforms.

Maytah pointed out the labour movement's effective participation in the polls, based on "their absolute faith in the concept of citizenship and the importance of the citizens' involvement in the developmental decisions to serve their country".

He said in a statement that the election of representatives to the municipal and governorate councils across the country signaled the citizens' participation in setting the priorities of each governorate and defining their needs of infrastructure projects to maximize national achievements.

Holding the elections as a national merit, he said, is an indication that Jordan, surrounded by regional turmoil, is determined to forge ahead with political reforms and bring about change through the ballot box, "not through the language of war and blood being used to make that change".
