Oman- Orientation programme for SQU students starts today

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The orientation programme of the 32nd batch of undergraduate students, admitted for the academic year 2017-18, at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), will begin on Sunday.

The programme will include lectures, meetings and tours which aim at introducing the new students to campus life, academic programmes, services and facilities offered by the university, stated a press release.

On the first day, Dr Ali bin Saud al Bemani, vice chancellor of SQU, will address the students and talk about academic and campus life. As part of the orientation programme, an exhibition on services provided for the students will be held. The exhibition will be organised by different units at the university including the Deanship of Admissions & Registration, the Deanship of Student Affairs, the Centre for Preparatory Studies, the Centre for Information Systems, Main Library, Student Guidance Centre, Student Advisory Council and other support centres that provide services to university students.

The placement tests in Mathematics, English and IT for the new students will be held during the induction week that lasts from August 22 to 29.

The university has received through the Higher Education Admission Centre, 3,000 undergraduate students and more than 300 postgraduate students who will be enrolled for more than 60 programmes offered by the nine colleges at SQU. Through the electronic admission station 'Meelad', the students will complete the process of admission and registration formalities. The students can access the website and fill the application electronically without physically being present at the university, added the release.

Dr Bemani said that the university has launched student accommodation facilities for the newly enrolled male students in order to facilitate the educational process. The new facility called 'Al Raha Residences' will be allocated to the new batch of students.

'This initiative is part of the university's efforts to provide appropriate learning environment for its students which will help them to focus more on their academic side and thus reduce the number of students who fail in their first year. Some of the students fail due to the lack of suitable accommodation and housing facilities,' he said.

As per the new initiative, the university will provide a range of services including furnished rooms for about 1,200 students and transportation service of two trips per day to the university and the residence complexes. The university also provides food, laundry, free Internet, maintenance, photocopying, printing, study halls, entertainment, prayer rooms and health services for the students at Al Raha Residences.

Dr Bemani said that the Internet speed has been upgraded from 580Mbps to 1800Mbps. The university is a founding member of the Oman Research and Education Network project which will allow the students and researchers to communicate with similar networks around the world for an interactive learning environment.
