Lebanese army announces offensive against Daesh


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Beirut, Aug.19 (Petra) -- The Lebanese army Saturday declared the start of an offensive against the Daesh terror group close to the Syrian border in the east of the country.

"In the name of Lebanon, the name of kidnapped Lebanese soldiers and the name of martyrs of the army, I announce the start of our military operation 'Dawn of Jurud' ," army chief General Joseph Aoun said, referring to the mountainous Jurud Arsal border region.

The Lebanese army started targeting Daesh positions in Jroud near Ras Baalbek town with rockets, artillery and helicopters, the source said.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun was also following the army operation, at the army headquarters in the Ministry of Defence.
