Afghanistan- 2 Helmand women fall prey to domestic violence


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Two have been killed in separate incidents of domestic violence in southern Helmand province, officials said on Friday.

A woman was stabbed to death by her spouse in Washir district on Thursday, the provincial women's affairs director, Jamila Niazi, told Pajhwok Afghan News. She said the killer, who is a doctor, had been captured by militants after the murder.

Another woman, who committed self-immolation on Thursday in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, breathed her last in hospital on Friday, Niazi said. The incident took place in 28 family area.

The victim took the extreme step after being fed up of problems with her husband and his sister and left behind two children, the official said.

Human rights commission head in Helmand Afia Maroof said the man who killed his wife in Washir district had been captured by Taliban and the husband of the woman who committed suicide had also been arrested by police.

She said increasing incidents of violence against women had concerned rights officials in Helmand.

Crime branch police chief Shakoor Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News that he had no information about the incident in Washir because the district was out of government control.

However, he said the incident in Lashkargah was being investigated and the slain woman's husband, Mohammad Arif, had been arrested.

Without going into details, he identified the woman who set herself alight in the 28 family area, as Fatima who died of burn injuries after reaching hospital.
