(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Activists drove in a convoy of vehicles through the streets of Kandahar City, the capital of southern Kandahar province, on Friday to encourage parents into sending their children to school.
The activists used load-speakers to call on people to admit their children in school and displayed banners inscribed with pro- slogans.
Launched by 'Qalam Lar' civil group, a large number of people, youth and activists took part in the campaign.
The banners read: 'Admit your children in school, who are seven years old, ' send your children to school to rescue your family and the nation from dependence on others,' ' we want buildings for schools', education is the only path to peace and development' and others.
The group's president, Matiullah Weesa, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a few days were left in the start of the new academic year and they wanted to encourage parents to admit their children, both girls and boys in school.
He said they were hopping not a single child would be left out of school in Kandahar City and districts in the new academic year.
He asked the Ministry of Education and the Kandahar Education Department to increase education related facilities, construct buildings for schools, overcome the shortage of professional teachers and textbooks.
Weesa said the education department should arrange awareness creating programs and reopen schools which had been closed for different reasons.
He said they initiated the campaign a few days ago from Arghistan district and carried out the drive in Takhta Pul district yesterday and today in Kandahar City. He said the campaign would be extended to other districts as well.
A member of the provincial council, Janan Gulzai, who participated in the campaign, said 'Seeking education is mandatory on every man and woman, therefore our demand from families is to educate their children.'
