Jordanian student who drowned in Romania laid to rest

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — The Jordanian student who drowned in a lake in Romania was laid to rest in Amman on Sunday, a family member has said.

Qusai Zarqa, a 20-year-old medicine student, was pulled out of Valiug Lake in Timisoara after he was reported missing 11 days before, Bahaa Zarqa, the student's uncle, told The Jordan Times on Monday.

The search took such a long time as the lake is large, deep and has an extremely muddy bottom, Zarqa said, adding that the Romanian police continued the search for 10 days without finding him, and on the 11th day they found his body floating in the lake.

The uncle, who joined the search efforts in Romania on the third day, said that he and Qusai's father had their flight and accommodation booked by the Jordanian embassy in Romania.

On July 31, Qusai went on a trip to the lake accompanied by a number of friends and, while swimming, he disappeared after calling out to a friend who could not rescue him, as his friend could not swim.

His friends reported him missing to the police and collected funds from Jordanian expats to hire divers and sonar devices, said Zarqa, who added that the lake was too deep for the divers.

The uncle commended the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, the Jordanian embassy and the Romanian embassy in Amman for their efforts during the search.
