Over 50 migrant workers held by Malaysian police in Nilai

A further 50 men and women working at an industrial estate in Nilai were detained over the weekend following two large-scale sweeps for terror suspects in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya last week.

At 2pm on Sunday, anti-terrorism corps from the Royal Malaysian police carried out raids at Nilai 3 Industrial Park, and took more than 50 foreign workers to the Sepang District Police Headquarters for further inquiries, Sin Chew Daily (Malaysia) reported on Monday.

Police sources said illegal workers were among those arrested along with some who had valid work permits. The authorities explained that all arrests were made to facilitate ongoing anti-terrorism operations and investigations.

Last Wednesday night, a total of 290 foreigners, most of Middle Eastern ethnic origin, were intercepted by the police at NeoCyber in Cyberjaya. Some 57 men and women were arrested and detained due to breaches of their conditions of stay.

During the nine-hour special operation between 9:30pm Wednesday till 6:30am Thursday, 98 foreigners were identified as students studying at four universities in Cyberjaya.

Malaysian police ran the names of 281 foreign men and nine foreign women through lists of Interpol Foreign Fighters & Terrorists, of the Royal Malaysian police's list of terror suspects, databases of the National Registration Department, the Immigration Department and of the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Detailed search results were not revealed to the public.

Among those arrested, 50 came from Yemen, 32 from Pakistan, 32 from Syria, 29 from Bangladesh, 27 from India, 22 from Nepal, 17 from Palestine, 10 from Sudan, seven from Indonesia, six from Libya, six from Nigeria, five from Saudi Arabia, five from Sri Lanka, five from Iran, five from Iraq, four from Algeria.
