Oman- Balushi selected as referee for FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman basketball still has a long way to go for its national team to compete at the continental level.

Ahmed al Balushi ensures that Oman's representation at the international stage is noticed, be it the Rio Olympic Games or the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, which began in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday.

Balushi officiated the inaugural game between New Zealand and Kazakhstan at the FIBA Asia Cup, which is being held in west Asia for the first time. He is one of the 23 referees selected by the FIBA (world basketball body) for the event that concludes on August 20.

The FIBA Asia Cup brings together the best 16 Asian teams through a qualifying format.

The 42 year old Balushi is one of the most recognisable faces at regional competitions and has been a FIBA referee for the past 14 years. He was Oman's first basketball referee to officiate at the Olympic Games in 2016.
