Kuwait- Renewable energy... Key to global sustainable development - UN

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, Aug 7 (KUNA) -- The UN attaches a great importance to the energy sector as a major catalyst for global economy; however, the traditional sources of energy are affecting climate, which thus enforces need of renewable energy to save the earth.

The need for renewable energy, the 7th objective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), approved by the UN in 2015, is key to the success of the Paris Climate Change agreement to reduce global warming, the UN office in Beirut said in a special bulletin.

It called for replacing the traditional sources of energy like fossil fuel, coal and gas with the power generated by the sun, wind and water.

The UN noted that one in every five persons around the world did not have electricity, while three billion people depend on wood, coal and animals' waste for cooking and heating.

It said four million people died every year because of pollution caused by cooking in closed areas, which lacked proper ventilation, which forced the UN to minimize use of carbon emitted from use of energy sources, citing an initiative launched by former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The UN bulletin called on importance of implementing the Paris agreement to address global warming. It called on developed countries to help developing nations reduce their harmful emissions.

Kuwait, an oil producing country, had taken an important step to achieve sustainable a renewable energy source.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said Kuwait would produce renewable energy accounting for 15 percent of total energy produced by the year 2030.

Kuwait started construction of renewable energy stations. A solar power station is producing 10 megawatts and a wind energy station producing the same amount. (end) wsm.bs
