UNESCO condemns killing of TV correspondent in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova condemned on Wednesday the killing of a TV correspondent in Syria several days ago and urged all parties to respect the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of journalists in war zones.

Bokova "denounced the killing of Russia (RT) correspondent Khaled Al-Khateb on July 20 in Homs," a statement from UNESCO said.

"I condemn the killing of Khaled Alkhateb" she said. "I call on all to respect the Geneva Conventions, which recognizes the targeting of journalists in conflict situations as a war crime," Bokova added.

She recalled to all parties that "information provided by the media can be vital for civilians' chances to survive conflict and journalists must be allowed to carry out their important work." Al-Khateb died after he was hit by a rocket during clashes in Homs. (end) jk.mb
