(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The ongoing Local Dates Festival, organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) at Souq Waqif, continues to register impressive sales and visitor figures.
The event drew some 5,000 visitors on its fifth day and also saw sales amounting to nearly 10.9 tonnes of dates, according to a statement by the MME. The festival began last
Thursday.
Yousef Khalid al-Khulaifi, director, agriculture affairs department, MME, said local dates are being displayed at Al Meera stores as distinguished Qatari products. Besides, steps are afoot to supply more locally produced vegetables to various shopping outlets across the country.
In addition, the MME is studying the possibility of introducing locally produced honey to shopping centres in the country.
Meanwhile, Al Wakrah Municipality's general control department has launched an inspection campaign to remove violating caravans from different areas in the municipality.
The campaign also targets portacabins and trailers and will continue for two months.
So far, 250 violating caravans have been found parked illegally near houses in residential areas. The municipal services affairs department would be contacted to remove the same, the statement notes.
Warning notices have been pasted on the caravans asking their owners to remove them, failing which the authorities concerned would take necessary legal action against the offenders.
The MME's general cleanliness department yesterday removed an abandoned boat from the Wakrah beach.
The ministry also informed that Fuwairit Beach is now open to the public following a successful turtle nesting season.
